Lauryn Hill spotted!

by SCOTT C

If you’ll permit me to go a little E-Talk Daily on you for a minute, I can share a Mile-End celeb sighting that beats seeing Jean Leloup talking to himself on St-Viateur any day. Last week, as I walked into Parc Ave.’s second hand CD/DVD Mecca CD Plus (5128 Parc), Nguyen Ngoc Phu, the pint-sized owner of the store, jumped into an excited reenactment of events that had happened earlier that day. Apparently, Fugees member and hip hop/soul superstar Lauryn Hill came into the store, accompanied by two huge security personnel, and proceeded to spend upwards of $450 on nothing but world music. I think I missed the whole event by about an hour and a half. Is Lauryn doing some work here in the city, or is CD Plus worth a trip from New York City to pick up music? Lemme know if you’ve got the scoop.

Wednesday nights at Lola Lounge are in transition, and will now be known as The Shining Wednesdays, starting Nov. 16. Hosted by Rugged Intellect, DJ Kane and DJ Static, this open-mic night is absolutely free for that midweek fix of hip hop goodness.

DJ Simon B strikes back with a S.O.U.L. Session this Friday, Nov. 11, at Salon Daomé. He’s diggin’ deep to bring you many different takes on soulful dancefloor movements, so make sure you take the time to make your way to the floor. Saturday night at Daomé finds New Zealander Recloose returning to Montreal for some inner-city get-down with Alex Robbins and Andy Williams on support. His new LP Hiatus on the Horizon is out now on Peacefrog Records. The show is $10.

Montreal is still slow to pick up on the subtle funk genius of local musician Tony Ezzy. His ever-evolving musical projects keep coming, as well as his long-awaited gospel album, due sometime before the year is out. So if I tell you that Tony Ezzy is playing at Kunta Lounge’s Elevation tonight, Thursday, Nov. 10, please take note. Tony Ezzy’s Funk Freakout Straight Outta 1983 hits the basement this week. Five bucks at the door, starting at 11 p.m.

Tickets for the Dec. 3 Beenie Man show at Medley are now on sale, with the first 200 going for a mere $20. After that, advance tix are $30, $40 if you decide to buy them at the door. Beenie Man is joined by the Shocking Vibes Crew, with opening support provided by Django, Beeco, Bryms, Chonfa and Rasselas, as well as Road Warrior, Little Thunder, Firesquad and DJ Notch.

Don’t forget John Legend with Kindred the Family Soul live at Metropolis on Nov. 26!
