Lush laffs

I have a lot of respect for people who do stand-up comedy, and not just the ones who actually know what they’re doing. My heart has gone out to many comedians who, despite pleading from their friends and family, decide it’s a good idea to step to the stage with whatever it is they’ve decided is funny. Much like professional figure skating, there’s nothing quite like watching somebody choke in front of a room full of people who really want them to succeed. It’s soul-shattering. But if you’ve made the decision to follow the life of a funny guy, it’s something you might have to deal with from time to time. Here in Montreal, some of the city’s more ambitious comedy hacks have organized a show that has attained mythical proportions in the minds of the handful of people who’ve actually seen it. I’m talking, of course, about the Drunken Show, taking place this Friday, Nov. 4, at 5055 Pullman in St-Henri, where comics like Kwasi Thomas, Rodney Ramsey and Kris Bonaparte basically get lit, pie-eyed and stewed drunk before unleashing masterful routines on an equally intoxicated audience. If this sounds like music to your ears, know that tix are $10 in advance or $15 at the door, with showtime at 9 p.m. You can e-mail Kwasi at thedrunkenshow@gmail.com iwantin@gmail.com,iwantine@gmor call Nick Lartey at 816-2879 for any additional info you may need.

Kops Crew is flaunting a new night down at Vinyl Lounge. Long Live Fridays sets you up for the weekend with hip hop and funk every week, with residents Fatsak and Masterbeater. This Friday, Nov. 4, they welcome Sixtoo into the fold, and you can enjoy a set from the dark knight for absolutely free. Big Six dropped a hot set down at the Just for Laughs Museum last week, so you can expect more of the same.

Montreal gets a taste of the West London broken beat vibe this week, when half-Japanese New Zealander Mark de Clive-Lowe touches down for a live performance at the Goods. Flanked by vocalist Bembe Segue (Bugz in the Attic, DKD, Silhouette Brown) MdCL will recreate London’s Freesoul Sessions, where songs are improvised live with the aid of an MPC 3000, a slew of keyboards and some participation from local musicians. Tix are $15 at the door, no frills.

Don’t forget power groove trio Soulive playing Café Campus on Friday, Nov. 11, for $15. They’re joined by Reggie Watts and the Soulive Horns, for what will probably be a night to remember.

Seven reasons to look over your shoulder:
1. Slum Village self-titled (Barak)
2. Sikh Knowledge “Knilla” (CDR)
3. Jamie Lidell “What’s the Use” (Warp)
4. Theo Parrish “Out There” (Sound Signature)
5. Black Milk Sound of the City mixtape (Music House)
6. The Earl “Life” Kev Brown remix feat. Stro (Footlong Development)
7. Little Barrie “Greener Pastures” (Genuine)
