The Incubator

Just for kicks

by SCOTT C

Lost in the confusion brought about by the temporary closing of the Blue Dawg on St-Laurent over the last few weeks, sweet selector Ms. B was robbed of her birthday celebration back on Sept. 22. Now older, wiser, and with the doors of the Dawg open for business once again, it’s time for her to see the roof raised for her better-late-than-never birthday celebration. This week, she’s joined by Little Thunder, LDG, Road Warrior, Fatta, Jah Mikes and King Levi down at Blue Dawg’s regular Reggae Massive Thursday for the ultimate birthday blowout.

You may already know that Montreal’s own Ghislain Poirier is playing a show at the Savoy Room inside Metropolis this Friday as part of MEG Montreal, but did you know that he’s been added as the opening act for U.K. grime midget Lady Sovereign’s first North American tour? With eight dates that will take them from Boston to Los Angeles, you can look for them to stop in Montreal at la Tulipe on Dec. 2.

Got a note from Alexandra this week expressing much despair in light of the fact that Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley’s North American tour will not be coming to a Montreal venue near you. He is playing Toronto on Nov. 28, if you really need to be there, but what’s strange is how he’s opening for U2 for 14 of his American dates. I want to know, who thought up that stellar combination?

After years of international hustling, living on the edge and professional schmoozing, Pablo Aravena’s feature-length documentary about graffiti’s evolution around the globe will see its official Montreal debut this Friday, Oct. 21. Next: A Primer on Urban Painting will be screening at the Just For Laughs Museum at 9 p.m., followed by live painting by HVW8, Other, Labrona, Roadsworth and Turf One, and music provided by Sixtoo, Moonstarr and yours truly. Admission is absolutely free.

Although they’re probably not about to let me in the door with my busted kicks, all you shoe-heads out there might be interested to know that the world’s largest touring sneaker exhibition and collaborative art show is coming to Montreal. Sneaker Pimps has a thousand of the rarest shoes you’ll ever get to sniff up close, customized by internationally known artists like Futura, London Police, BAPE, Dalek, Brothers Free and more. There’s also exclusive, limited-edition colour ways from Nike, Puma, Pro Keds, Asics, New Balance, Pony and many more. You can check that out this Friday, Oct. 21 at the Nest, with musical support from Simahlak, Toddy Flores and if I’m not mistaken, the High and Mighty’s DJ Mighty Mi.
