Local heroics

by SCOTT C

The organizers of the ongoing festival Hip Hop You Don’t Stop are certainly living up to their name, with yet another installment of their events tailored to schooling the youth—and any interested parties—about the foundations of hip hop culture. Coming up on Oct. 29, the legendary Rock Steady Crew member and lifetime b-boy Ken Swift, and his colleague Honey Rockwell, visit Centre Communautaire Côte-des-neiges for a workshop, performance and some celebrity judging of local b-boy and b-girl competitions. If you’re interested in taking part in this uptown throwdown, get in touch with Fred at ill_relevance@yahoo.com.

Bombay Records founder Patrick Dream has teamed up with MIXart Studios’ Kirk Coleman to introduce a new local label, Mile End Records. Focusing on a fusion of live, soulful music and late-night house, this team are the next ones out of the gate to export the MTL vibe. Their official launch happens this Saturday, Oct. 15 at SAT with the release of two CDs and a 12-inch EP. Music will be provided by DJ Vivi-Ann, Miguel Graça and Angel Moraes, with an $8 ticket, before the party moves to Stereo later in the evening. There, DJs Bear, Julian Prince and Patrick Dream will pick up the rest of what will be a long night.

The boys at 417 St-Pierre in Old Montreal have decided to change the name of their weekly Thursday night to the Bassment, but it still features the hip hop hand-skills of Maysr, Fat-Sak and AC. Their special guests tonight, Oct. 13, are the disturbingly-named DJ Masterbeater, D-Shade and Tactics the Universal Soldier. Tactics don’t come out to play too often, so if you know what’s up, make sure you’re there.

Speaking of Thursdays, Skratch Bastid is at the controls of a new night at Blizzarts called Local Heroes, where he’ll be sharing the decks week to week with regular guests playing hip hop and funk for your ass. Speaking of the Bastid, I’ll be playing with him down at Vinyl, right where Luba used to be at 2109 Bleury, this Saturday night at Peer Pressure. Hosted by a loose collective of cats and residents DJ Static and A-Rock, you can expect to hear some bona fide joints up in there.

Make sure you scan the MEG Montreal program for the Bully Records showcase on Oct. 22 at SAT. Sixtoo, P-love, Simahlak, Matt Kelly, DJ Signify and Joe Beats will entertain you with experimental hip hop for your mind. Stones Throw CEO Peanut Butter Wolf will also throw down that very same night, while Ghislain Poirier chimes in with a set at the ol’ Savoy Room in Metropolis.
