“I’d just like to thank God...”

Somewhere in the suburbs of Toronto, K-OS is smiling right now. The Canadian hip hop star has been nominated for not only the Fans Choice Award at the Canadian Urban Music Awards, but also Hip-Hop Recording of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Producer of the Year and Music Video of the Year for Joyful Rebellion. Any contempt he’s had for the music industry over the years might have to play second fiddle to a dwindling amount of space on his mantelpiece, where his Junos might have to make some room very soon.

You may already know that the incomparable Large Professor is going to be in town for a show at Foufounes on Oct.12, along with Stones Throw hot boy MED, but did you also know that the two will be at Off the Hook (1021-A Ste-Catherine W.) that same date from 5 to 7 p.m.? Heads can dust off their Main Source LPs and singles and get them personally blessed by Extra P himself.

This Saturday, Oct. 1, Vander, Dan Beats, Singer Judah and Riddim Wise Sound take over le Swimming with their Bass Ma Boom Soundsystem. For $7, you’ll get your fill of dub and reggae at this Pop Montreal collaboration bringing you bass culture on a silver platter.

DJ Karsten John, all the way from Köln, Germany, plays Salon Daomé this Friday, Sept. 30. Tix are $10, or $5 before 11 p.m. If you missed Miri Ben-Ari (the hip hop violinist) playing downtown the other week at Concordia, and you still have a nagging desire to see the disparate worlds of classical music and hip hop collide, you’ve got another chance. No, Miri isn’t coming back anytime soon, but Black Violin will be here on Sunday, Oct. 2 at the MAI. Think two dueling, classically-trained violinists who just happen to play hip hop and you’re on the right track. They’ll be playing with Las Krudas from Cuba and Dynamo Cleopatra, starting at 10 p.m. on Sunday night.

Seven reasons Watson needs hot beats:

2. Dave Ghetto “Spread the Light” (Counterflow)
3. Steve Spacek “Space Shift” (Sound In Color)
4. Damian Marley “Welcome to Jamrock” (Universal)
5. John Arnold Style and Pattern (Ubiquity)
6. Hearin Aid The Boom Lucy (Jugglin’)
7. Oh No feat. J Dilla & Roc C “Move pt. 2 ” (Stones Throw)
