If you’ve already scanned the Pop Montreal calendar, looking for cheap indie and underground hip hop shows among all the names, keep looking and let me know if you find something hidden amongst the underbrush. You might be surprised to know that TTC will be returning to Montreal for a Pop Montreal show with Ghislain Poirier and Busdriver at Club Soda on Wednesday, Sept. 28. Turntablist brothers till the end, the No Luck Club plays the Green Room on the same night, when they take things over at 1 a.m. Down at Kunta Lounge, Soltribe takes the stage at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, with their live, soulful broken beat vibe. What’s this? Saul Williams doing the Pop & Politics keynote address? Make your way to Club Soda on Thursday, Sept. 29 for Saul, along with South African hip hop group Tumi & the Volume and K’naan, the Dusty Foot Philosopher. Don’t forget the heroic trio of Simahlak, Jordan Dare and P-Thugg as their Get Low monthly at Main Hall brings you Devin the Dude live with Chromeo. The legend Tony Ezzy assembles the Masters of the Universe for a galaxy-saving show at the Academy Club at midnight, also on Sept. 29, while LAL’s Rosina Kazi and Nick Murray do their thing over at the MAI on the very same night, starting at 8 p.m. Check www.popmontreal.com for a hundred more bands that you never heard of, but should probably check out anyway. If you’re in dire need of some artistic inspiration, take a second and check out Turf One’s new Web site at www.turfizm.com. From his paintings to street art, illustration and comics, Turf is still one of the most slept-on talents living right here in this city. Bumped into my boy DJ Critical Hype, and he passed me a flyer for his new night, Toxic Thursdays, that he’s doing with Robz Vega, Maysr, DJ Fatsak and Rugged Intellect down at 417 St-Pierre in Old Montreal. They’re playing hip hop and reggae for the people every week, so check it out. Seven reasons to exercise your pelvic muscles: MIRI BEN-ARI? ANY THOUGHTS? fathead@videotron.ca |
