There goes
the sun

by RAF KATIGBAK

There are two big things in my life that “ain’t just a river in Egypt.” The first is of course, Styx (“Come Sail Away”—best DJ set closer ever?), and then there’s denial, which I’m completely immersed in at the moment.

I refuse to believe that summer’s over. In fact, anytime anyone asks, “So, how was your summer?” I belligerently correct them, “You mean how is my summer?! Right?!”—which causes most people to inch away slowly as I get all cross-eyed and twitchy. Yes, I will be one of those guys rocking Bermuda shorts and a tank top, going, “Where’s the party?” as people don their woollen scarves to meet the frosty chill of October.

I think it’s time we squeeze as much bloody sunlight out of Mother Nature as we possibly can. How exactly can we do that, you ask? Three words: reflective tinfoil jumpsuits! Who’s with me?

Or we can just spend as much time drinking on terrasses as humanly possible. A great option is the new Take a Break nights at Terrasses Bonsecours in the Old Port. Every Thursday night for the last couple of months, this upscale terrasse has been providing a beautiful panorama of the city, accompanied by the sounds of some of Montreal’s best DJs. This week, Mighty Kat will join the ranks of Robert de la Gauthier, Mossa and Jordan, who have laid down the sounds in past weeks. Next week, it’s Pfreud and Arsen who’ll be cooking things up outside. A great place to get away from the usual St-Laurent rabble.

Tonight, if you just can’t seem to tear yourself away from the Main because the prospect of 3 a.m. awful-falafel is just too irresistible, drop by Blizzarts. Le Mish Mash is long-time resident Bliss’s regular Thursday hoe-down, and the special guest tonight is the inimitable Lexis, who promises broken beats, strange games and all things funky.

Speaking of funky, this Sunday the Funkn Soul festival presents Steve Raskin from the Fort Knox 5 crew at Living. If you’re a breaks fan, you need to check Raskin out—D.C.’S FK5 have been runnin’ tings on the breaks scene for some time now with their myriad of remixes (Tower of Power), collabs (Afrika Bambaataa) and singles. Also on hand will be DJ Czech and Keph, so no ’scuses!

Also on Sunday, local experimentalist label Le Son 666 hosts another Electric Sunday at l’Hémisphère Gauche. This time, Jean-Luc Guionnet & Pascal Battus from France will be headlining while ex-Montrealer naw and local Satured22 fill out the bill. If you’re tired of the chicka-boom, head here for a change of pace.

On the topic of changing pace, it’s time for some gratuitous self-promotion as Disko Akimbo announces its first official weekly party at Wunderbar (901 Square-Victoria). Friday night is Riff-Raff Disko featuring the one and only Dr. Octoboobies spinning the finest in, well, everything! There’s no cover, e-mail me for guest list and info.

While I’m making announcements, this weekend’s Neon mini-fest announced that Alexi Delano (ADNY) will not be coming to perform at the I Love Neon after-party on Sept. 4. New York’s Matt Safer (the Rapture/DFA) will play in his place.
