Back to school my ass! Listen, if you're trying to impress a special somebody with tickets to a show that will put you in the good books for a very long time, you should probably pay attention to what I'm about to say. Yes, it's yet another festival indeed, with the Montreal International FunknSoul Festival running from Sept. 1–10. This is the second year for this fest, brought to you by Jojo Flores and the Gotsoul crew, and they've got some ringers in the line-up worth checking out, most notably Louie Vega from Masters at Work, playing at 1234 on Sunday, Sept. 4, and legendary vibraphonist Roy Ayers playing Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Cabaret. I'm not so sure about Louie, but Roy might get you laid if you've already put in some work. You can check out the rest of the FunknSoul roster at www.funknsoulfest.com to see if you're going to have multiple chances to impress your beau.

If you're looking for a sure-fire in, without cutting corners or taking any chances, drop some dough for Seu Jorge tickets. This Brazilian lothario most recently stole the show singing acoustic David Bowie covers in Portuguese, as one of Steve Zissou's devoted crew members in The Life Aquatic. Ladies love him, men want to be him, and he plays Club Soda on Saturday, Sept. 10.

Take a minute and check out Ghislain Poirier as he unveils his latest live development with the help of dub aficionado Vander, with Vander Meets Poirier at Quai des Brumes this Saturday, Aug. 27. This night of dub vs. hip hop will also include a special appearance from Omnikrom, for only $7 at the door.

Everybody needs to know that as well as DJing at this week's Ninja Tune/Piknic Electronik blowout at Parc Jean-Drapeau, our boy P-Love has finished his new LP for Montreal's Bully Records and is available for you and yours! The record, called All Up In Your Mind, has been a long time coming and might surprise you. P is a tad more musical than your average deck wrecker and you can tell he put a lot of time and effort into his debut, so check it out. Think I'm lying? www.weloveplove.net.

Don't miss the debut of Get Low tonight, Thursday, Aug. 25, at Main Hall. DJs P-Thugg (Chromeo), Jordan Dare (Turbo) and Simahlak (Audio Research) will not only bring back gold bling, stacks of cash and lasers, but a special guest in the form of DJ A-Trak, fresh off his new post with Kanye West. The tax is $5.

Seven reasons I smell burnt hair and bacon...
1. Slum Village Prequel to a Classic LP (Barak)
2. Monk.e "Dude!?!" ft. Maybe Watson (independent)
3. Roc ‘C' "Don't Stop" ft. Oh No and Poke Dog (Stones Throw)
4. Piano Overlord Tease EP (Money Studies)
5. Dwele "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" (CDR)
6. Spank Rock self-titled debut LP (Big Dada)
7. Missy Elliot "Joy" ft. Mike Jones (Atlantic)
