"It’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the lights. It’s time to meet the Muppets, on The Muppet Show - tonight." After releasing a handful of "Best of" DVDs, with three episodes a piece, Buena Vista is finally releasing entire seasons of The Muppet Show - a series that is nearly unequalled in brilliance among the annals of family entertainment. The first season includes 24 episodes, the pilot and Jim Henson’s original pitch reel. It’s not totally complete, though, because the end of the pitch, where Kermit kind of swears (he says "hell") has been excised. Also missing are six songs from various episodes, due to licensing issues. But you still get the likes of Vincent Price, Candace Bergen and Twiggy appearing as guest hosts. Indispensable!
One show that never even made it to 24 episodes was Judd Apatow’s 2001 college comedy Undeclared, which was unjustly cut after only 16 airings, a fate similar to his previous show Freaks and Geeks. Now, after the success of the F&G boxset, the entire televised run of Undeclared is available on DVD. It’s smart, funny and worth a look. » Mark Slutsky
