Finger lickin' good

by SCOTT C

I don't want to perpetuate any stereotypes or anything, but last night, me and my pal Bruiser took the plunge and sat down to a plate of ribs at our friendly neighborhood Baton Rouge. As the couple next to us watched us moan, groan and lick our fingers with delight, I swore to myself that this was something that I was definitely going to do more often. I've yet to hit a BBQ this summer where there was a proper rack of ribs on deck, and I seriously doubt that it'll happen this year, but I can always hope. If you even have a working BBQ and a place to put it, count yourself lucky, and make sure you're putting that shit to use. Some of us can only dream of such luxuries.

Leaving the smells of hickory and mesquite behind, we walked through the Francofolies hubbub as it wound down for the night. If you take a walk down there this Friday, Aug. 5, you might want to check out Sans Pression, who'll be performing on the Monde Hip Hop Solo stage at both 7 and 9 p.m. Roll down to Metropolis on the same night and you can catch Loco Locass at 9 p.m. for $17.50. Quebec's answer to the Beastie Boys have been raking in the crowds for years and probably have every intention of packing that place, so if you're a fan, get a move on.

A little switch-up at Blizzarts, with a new Friday night featuring Kobal and Quasar playing soul, funk, disco, hip hop and more. Still $4 at the door.

This Saturday, Aug. 6, come celebrate 30 years of DJing with Montreal house music pioneer Tony Desypris when he plays with DJ Moka at SAT. As part of a new monthly night hosted by Moka called Cosmic Café, Tony will also celebrate his birthday with a special three-hour journey into the crates. Tix are $10 at the door.

With Andy Williams away for a few weeks, I'm joined at the Goods this Saturday by DJ Alex Robbins. Easily one of my favourite guys to play with, largely due to his ability to drop nothing but gems from all genres, I'm thinking it could be serious. That's at la Sala Rossa, and the tax is $8.

Sunday finds the collective movements of Montreal hip hop group Nomadic Massive at work with a show at le Swimming. They'll be performing with Ekinox, DJ Movez and Marseille's DJ Syde. Tix are $10, with money going towards the Nomad's Land Tour that will take Nomadic to Chile to workshop with inner-city youth. There's also a screening of Marc André Jutras' film Santiago Cachai'Po: El Movimiento Hip Hop de Chile, starting at 8 p.m. Also at le Swimming, on Monday, Aug. 8, is Heads Connect, a new regular event produced by the ICM family to bring local and international hip hop talent to the same stage. This month's bill has Eye 2 Eye, Rugged Intellect, Loe Pesci and Who See representing lovely. The night is free, and more info is available at www.islandcitymonsters.com.
