Though it's great news that The Mary Tyler Moore Show: The Complete Second Season has finally arrived on DVD, the perplexing question surrounding this release is what took it so damn long. The short answer is, because the first season sold so poorly. Okay, public, it's time for a lecture: this show is the best thing that ever happened to TV, ever. So get with it and start panic-buying this season so volumes three–seven don't take quite so long to show up. Among the many highlights here: Lou Grant hires Rhoda to redecorate his house with horrific results, Rhoda's mom (Nancy Walker) returns and Jack Cassidy appears as Ted Baxter's brother (the actor who was originally slated to play the role). But the biggest bit of evolution: Moore was able to shed the ludicrous wig she was forced to wear for the entire first season.
The Upside of Anger also hits stands this week. Suffice it to say, this film's main upside is the two winning performances from Joan Allen and Kevin Costner as world-class drunks. Too bad about the inexplicable character motivations and inane plot twists. » Matthew Hays
