Steve Martin might be embarrassing himself this year by treading in Peter Sellers' shoes in The Pink Panther remake, but there was a time when Martin was a comic genius in his own right. And there's no greater proof of that than his performance in 1979's The Jerk, where he stars as a total idiot who strikes it rich. The film, directed by Carl Reiner, has until now been poorly-served on DVD, with the existing edition presenting it solely in the pan & scan format ("full-frame"), with bad sound and missing footage. The new "26th Anniversary Edition" corrects those wrongs, and adds special features like the mysterious "Lost Filmstrips of Father Carlos Las Vegas de Cordorva."

Also out this week is the first season of Remington Steele, starring pre-007 Pierce Brosnan - who turned down the first offer to play James Bond in the early '80s because of his commitment to the series. Following the adventures of a con-man-turned-detective who solves crimes with a little inspiration from classic movies, the show was kind of the anti-Bond, but smart and funny nonetheless and worth revisiting. » Mark Slutsky
