Considered a cultural touchstone for ’80s goofiness, upon re-viewing, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure reveals itself as a great, smart comedy. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter strike the perfect notes of earnest dudeness as the San Dimas, California-bred slacker teens (and founders of rock band Wyld Stallynz), who hook up with George Carlin and journey back in time to chill with Napoleon, Joan of Arc, Socrates and other “historical personages.” A new box set, Bill & Ted’s Most Excellent Collection, features both the original and its sequel, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (where the two play Battleship with the Grim Reaper), as well as a bonus disc featuring behind-the-scenes docs, a history lesson (!), an interview with legendary guitarist Steve Vai, and, of course, an air-guitar tutorial.
On the other side of the coin, something from the ’80s that should absolutely never be revisited is out on DVD this week, and that would be The Garbage Pail Kids Movie. Based on the collectible stickers, this is perhaps the most disgusting gross-out film ever made—complete with horrible latex costumes, singing and nose-picking. » Mark Slutsky
