Speedy, you're a somebody >> What doesn't U.K. multi-tasker Dom Servini do? |
|
DJ of all things raw, real and funky, club-night impresario and concert promoter, label honcho, music scribe at groove bible Straight No Chaser and radio jock - with a checklist like that, Servini had better be speedy. Despite the current lack of a regular venue, his Mouseorgan nights in London are still going strong after seven years of cool grooves old and new, and sets by Jazzanova, Quantic and even his highness, Gilles Peterson of BBC's Radio 1. "His debut at Mouseorgan in 2000 was one of the most memorable nights. The club had far too many people in it, he blew up the sound system, Earl Zinger was heard to be chanting ‘filthy, filthy' on the mic and Raphael Sebbag, then of UFO, fled immediately in fear of damaging his pristine white suit. Now that's jazz." The similar Wah Wah nights at the Jazz Café (which Servini did with brothers Chris and Simon Goss, his partners in the Wah Wah 45s specialty label, and which hosted the likes of Pharaoh Sanders, Jimmy Smith and the Herbaliser) are now gone - but not forgotten. "I got to play more old-school funk and jazz records than at Mouseorgan. No bad thing! Our Cargo sessions that we do now remind me of those days." With all the ground he's covered, it seems the final frontier for Servini would be making his own music. "I've had a go a couple of times. I don't think it's my strongest area, and I don't really have the time right now. Plus, the thought of it scares me a bit. I know far too many people who're better at it than I am anyway - although the odd re-edit isn't out of the question!" With Scott C at Main Hall on Saturday, June 25, 10 p.m., $10 |
