Looks like a holiday to me

With a list of things to do that's longer than my leg, I'll skip the usual banter and get right to it.

Anybody out there who's been in therapy for six years could probably tell you a story or two about the human condition, but those of you who've been going to Therapy with JojoFlores and Misayo for the last six years know that it's time to celebrate your weekly dose of Afro-Latin rhythms and soulful house. When he's not racking up air miles, you can find Jojo, and company, holding down what has become a Montreal mainstay for great Thursday-night garage vibes. Tonight, June 23, at Jello, they're going all out for the six-year anniversary with six special guests. You can look forward to performances from Julie McKnight, Kenny Bobien, Aya, Lady Bird, Cordell McClary and yet another sweet set from Osunlade. If you're not already on the list, I wouldn't bother trying, but if you're planning to attend, make sure you've got your spot by the velvet ropes early - like, 6 p.m.

If you're looking for a St-Jean party that doesn't involve bongos, bare feet and flag-waving, head down to Jet Club for Heat Wave, also tonight. DJs Majess, Kwite Sane, Quest, J.E. Bunns and good ol' Butcher T serve up everything from soca and R&B to booty and classic house. Bust out your St-Jean best, because they don't play the flip-flop game at the door. Doors open at 10 p.m. and tickets are available at 963-8175.

Next. You'd be a fool not to check out dub-poet superwoman d'bi young when she performs at la Sala Rossa this Saturday, June 25. This is one powerful sister when she gets on the mic, bringing dancehall and serious dub poetry to a head. Backed by her band Dubbin Revolushun, she's releasing the single "Animal Farm" from the upcoming LP Chronicles in Dub: Blood. Those in attendance will also be treated to a screening of the Cuban-Canadian documentary of d'bi's travels in Cuba, Blood. Doors open at 8 p.m., with the doc starting at 8:30 p.m. Tix are $8 in advance and $10 at the door.

Just down the street on Saturday at Divan Orange, it's time again for the Afrofunk party, home of Afro-beat, funk and great live performances every month. Joining DJ Kobal is DJ Static, as well as live hip hop from Euphrates and Butta Beats, and paintings by Chopin. Some great things coming out of Divan Orange these days, and this will no doubt be another.

As if that wasn't enough, Montreal welcomes U.K. DJ/label head/music writer Dom Servini to the city for the first time when he plays at the Main Hall on Saturday. Servini runs Wah Wah 45s out of London, but is best known for his long-running contributions to the magazine Straight No Chaser, where he writes the Sounding Off 12-inch reviews, spanning jazz, funk, broken beat, house, hip hop and other outerwordly sounds. Could be crazy. Hit up info@lebarbu.com for more info.
