For all those aspiring filmmakers who are tired of the worn and weary advice of a stuffed shirt like Syd Field, you would do well to check out the advice of Lloyd Kaufman, mastermind behind the sleaze merchant operation Troma Films. In his new, four-disc DVD set, Make Your Own Damn Movie!, Kaufman explains, in typically nutjob fashion, how to jump-start your career in Z-movie-making and keep it going on for years. Delightfully shameless, Kaufman chats his way though a barrage of rapid-fire lessons on how to schmooze, write, produce, direct, distribute, act and scam your way through the rather sordid underbelly that is the film biz. Included in this set is Troma’s hilarious feature about distribution and publicity-mongering at festivals, titled All the Love You Cannes. Among Kaufman’s choice bits of advice: save your airplane food so you have at least one meal covered on the French Riviera, and pretend to be closing an important deal while pretending to talk to someone on your cell phone in order to impress passersby. » Matthew Hays
