This is his life

>> A-Trak comes home with tales to tell

by SCOTT C

If you still haven't heard the legend of 23-year-old DJ A-Trak, then gather round and I'll try to break it down quickly. Once upon a time there was a young scratch DJ from Montreal who ate his vitamins and said his prayers and eventually went on to win seven world titles. This young bachelor graduated from jet-setting with his mom to keeping up one of the most impressive lists of international bookings you could ever imagine. His continued success has allowed him to grow into manhood with a healthy sense of self, and a record label called Audio Research. To bring you up to date, A-trak recently improved his chances of getting on Access Hollywood when he was asked by hip hop producer du jour Kanye West to be his tour DJ. So now, after having been on the road with Kanye, Usher and all those screaming girls, A-Trak is making a rare Montreal appearance. The Mirror spoke to our young whippersnapper last weekend from London.

Mirror: Are you what they would call an A-lister at this point in the game? Because I see you've been working the upper echelons with power moves as of late.

A-Trak: Man, I don't know. I still feel like I'm far from where I want to be. I've been blessed in the past year but I still have plenty of moves to make.

M: Are you required to like everything that Kanye has produced as a result of being part of the team?

A: Well, technically, no. But I really do like all his work. Except for Memphis Bleek's "P.Y.T." remake. And I did tell him about that one.

M: Has Kanye ever threatened you with violence to make sure you didn't screw up live on stage?

A: No violence threats. I think you'd have to be pretty damn evil to threaten me with violence, because I visibly couldn't hurt a fly. With the amount of shows we've done on those tours, each one of us was bound to screw up at some point. I mean, our first show was in front of 15,000 people and we only had two hours to rehearse. I just had to learn how to read him - to learn that this look means, "Stop the song after this chorus," while that look means, "My watch fell off, remind me to grab it."

M: Are you doing anything particularly exciting with all the extra stacks of money you have lying around?

A: See, now you're talking crazy talk.

M: When is your bloodclot Sunglasses Is a Must DVD coming out, man?! Don't you think your loyal supporters have waited long enough?

A: The DVD is coming out in September. The perfect back-to-school present! Honestly, it's been a lot of work. I think it's the longest I've ever worked on anything. But man, it covers like nine years of my life. There's so much material in there, it feels like a "This Is Your Life" segment on The Muppet Show. Or was it Sesame Street? You know what I'm talking about, right?

With Non Phixion, Euphrates, Applied Science and Buddha Blaze at Foufounes Électriques on Wednesday, June 1, 9 p.m., $10
