It's over...

by SCOTT C

I never thought it would happen, but last week I found myself caught up in a little bit of hallway pontification after I buzzed in two Jehovah's Witnesses who I thought were my friend Dave. Normally, I would have quickly put any possibility of a conversation to a quick halt, but lucky for them, I had just finished watching a documentary called Who Wrote the Bible? and was more than ready to square off. After about 25 minutes, they seemed encouraged by my willingness to talk, and asked if we could meet again. So, this week when they returned unannounced for round two, I sat quietly on my bed and didn't answer the door, afraid to face them while intoxicated. I know they'll probably be back.

I don't know if God has anything to do with it, but Ghislain Poirier is playing at Blizzarts this Friday, May 27, alongside Kobal for Bustin' Loose/Bounce le Gros. Le Big G actually has a new LP coming out called Breakupdown on Chocolate Industries, which is about to hit the stores sometime in June. Kobal keeps it moving with another gig at Kola Note on Saturday, May 28, where he'll being take part in Planet Musique. This monthly combines live music and DJs playing some groove-related stuff to get you up. This month is the official launch of KATS Records new funk seven-inch, following up on 2004's debut release "Pull Me Up" by Dibondoko. Live music will be provided by Dibondoko, with DJs Ilya and Kobal, and art by Nadine Samuels. Ten dollars gets you in, with doors at 9 p.m.

Looks like the gazebo on Mount Royal could be the Saturday-afternoon summer spot - if summer ever kicks in, that is. This Saturday, May 28, at 2 p.m., and hopefully every Saturday for the rest of the summer, look for musicians, DJs and people chillin' on the hill. There's a BBQ in effect and you can bring food, or buy food there. If you've got any further questions, e-mail christina@newartscollective.com. She'll straighten you out.

Tally Abecassis and Claudine Sauvé are finally having the official launch for their new book Barbershops, featuring portraits, decor and stories from barbershop culture. You'll find the launch and an exhibit of photos from the book at Espace Perspective Gallery (19 Fairmount E.) on Thursday, June 2, from 5 p.m.
