Montrealers

Montrealer Closest to Sainthood
1. Father Emmett "Pops" Johns
2. Leonard Cohen
3. Frère André
4. Monsignor Jean-Claude Turcotte
5. Celine Dion
6. Gérald Tremblay
7. Pierre Elliott Trudeau
8. Justin Trudeau
9. Sid Stevens
10. Reverend Darryl Gray
Honourable mention: William Shatner • Paul Martin • Jean Charest

While there hasn't been any real competition for the top spot - Pops, who runs Le Bon Dieu dans la rue, has held it since forever - our most famous Buddhist moves up from No. 7 last year to a position more appropriate to his legendary status. Perhaps the pope's death ignited some piety among our local lapsed Catholics, with the return of St. Joseph's Oratory founder Frère André and Cardinal Turcotte, our pape manqué. Notably absent are sports personalities, for some reason.

Reasonable bling

>> Montreal R&B sensation Corneille on the how and why of looking good

"I'm into jewellery, but I'm not into bling," says Montreal's well-dressed singing sensation Corneille, who ranked fourth in the Best-Dressed Montrealer category this year, and fifth in Best Singer/ Songwriter. "I'm into reasonable bling."

With a style that can be described as urban classic, the 28-year-old, Rwandan-born R&B star has always been fashion conscious. "It goes all the way back to my upbringing. My parents, particularly my father, taught me that you should always present yourself in a particular manner. In fact, whenever I have a concert, the analogy I use is that the public is sort of that girl that you want impress because you like her so much. It's sort of a date that you go on, so you want to present yourself at your best."

For Corneille, that could mean throwing it back to a vintage, Marvin-Gaye-era suit (Gucci or Cavalli) or the classic casual look of jeans (L.A. denim company True Religion) and a T-shirt. The importance, says Corneille, is in the details. "I'm into a good necklace, but it has to mean something. I'm into ethnic-style jewellery - for example, I have a bracelet that I got in Africa. I also like to combine the obviously trendy or luxurious with the very simple. If you know you have that hot watch - Rolex, but not too many diamonds, of course - a T-shirt and jeans are cool. It doesn't have to be crazy brands from head to toe."

Montrealer Closest to Hell
1. Jean Charest
2. Gérald Tremblay
3. Paul Martin
4. Pierre Bourque
5. Celine Dion
6. Bernard Landry
7. Maurice "Mom" Boucher
8. Brian Mulroney
9. Guy Cloutier
10. Malik Shaheed
Honourable mentions: Jean Chrétien • Ben Mulroney • Jean Brault

Our embattled premier takes top spot, to no one's surprise, while our embattled mayor slips to second. Hitherto-anonymous ad exec Jean Brault, he of cash envelopes at Restaurant Frank, appears for the first time, as does entertainment impresario and admitted pedophile Guy Cloutier.

Most Desirable Woman
1. Mitsou
2. Elisha Cuthbert
3. Mutsumi Takahashi
4. Izabelle Desjardins
5. Virginie Coossa
6. Melissa Auf der Maur
7. Jessica Paré
8. Celine Dion
9. Agent 69
10. Annie DeMelt
Honourable mentions: Orla Johannes • Jamie Orchard • Caroline Néron

Mitsou's captured our hearts and fuelled our libido for years, and 2005 is no exception. Cuthbert comes on strong as her acting career takes off, and Mutsumi's command of third place - a jump of a notch over last year - proves that we Montrealers enjoy a touch of class and maturity.

Most Desirable Man
1. Sam Roberts
2. Rufus Wainwright
3. Justin Trudeau
4. José Théodore
5. Roy Dupuis
6. Alexandre Despaties
7. Todd van der Heyden
8. Plastik Patrik
9. Leonard Cohen
10. Corneille
Honourable mentions: Sheldon Souray • Lounge King • Frigid

Some new names here: Singer Corneille, diver Despaties and hockey stud Souray. Montrealers, however, seem stuck on those we like, as the only difference in the top three from last year is recently engaged Trudeau's rise to third. Sorry girls!

Best-Dressed Montrealer
1. Rufus Wainwright
2. Karen Simpson
3. Plastik Patrik
4. Corneille
5. Sam Roberts
6. Ricky J
7. Mitsou
8. B'ugo Dahlin
9. Philippe Dubuc
10. Caroline Néron
Honourable mentions: Lucie Laurier • Leonard Cohen • Yso

Local MC Ricky J's reign of style is over, plummeting from last year's top spot to fifth. Rufus emerges as the king of the wardrobe, and actress/designer Karen Simpson rockets into second, after receiving an honourable mention in 2004. DJ B'ugo Dahlin and vedette Caroline Néron make their first appearances on the list.

Tackiest Personality
1. Mosé Persico
2. Ben Mulroney
3. Mado
4. Malik Shaheed
5. Celine Dion
6. JoJo Savard
7. Michèle Richard
8. Plastik Patrik
9. Anne-Marie Losique
10. Ricky J
Honourable mentions: Joselito Michaud • Josey Vogels • Julie Snyder • Mitsou • Orla Johannes • Tommy Schnurmacher • Tasso • Michel Girouard

Montreal's monarch of infotainment Mosé secures his dominance in this category, while Ben Mulroney is still cutting his chops in the fine art of sycophancy and shilling. But, young and oozing talent as he is, will he one day unseat the master? Or does wily vet Persico still have some tricks up his nattily tailored sleeve in the race to the top? Tune in next year!

Best Montreal Weirdo
1. Hollywood (Banana Gun Guy)
2. Spoonman
3. Maysr
4. Dancing Spiderman
5. Jack the bearded biker on tricycle
6. Mado
7. One-armed guy who takes his shirt off and asks for money
8. Madness
9. Saxophonist on stilts
10. Great Antonio
Honourable mentions: Plastik Patrik• Busker who plays three recorders, two out of his two nostrils • Guy on Parc with cats and dogs • Bloodshot Bill

Hollywood remains on top of this prestigious heap, while Spoonman and dancehall DJ Maysr switch spots. Soft-shoed Spidey moves up from honourable mention - last year he was Batman - as does Stumpy at No. 7. Greg Dunlevy, the stilt-swinging sax player, makes an appearance, and we still seem to cherish the late, beloved Great Antonio.

Best Politician
1. None!
2. Gérald Tremblay
3. Jean Charest
4. Gilles Duceppe
5. Paul Martin
6. Jean Chrétien
7. Pierre Trudeau
8. Helen Fotopulos
9. Pierre Bourque
10. Jack Layton

More often than not the top slot in this category is given over to variations on "No such thing," "There aren't any," etc. This year is no exception, but once we get past the bile, there are some interesting results. Our mayor seems to divide with voters, as does our premier. Gilles Duceppe's appearance for the first time in a long while (honourable mention, 2000) is likely due to his savvy capitalization on the Gomery mess. Absent for the first time in years is the former head of the Marijuana Party, Marc-Boris St-Maurice, who defected to the federal Liberals earlier this year.

Best Political/Social Cause
1. Student strikes
2. Peace
3. Environment
4. Marijuana legalization
5. Dans la rue (homeless kids)
6. Helping the homeless
7. AIDS
8. Marijuana legalization
9. Health care
10. Gay marriage
Honourable mentions: Affordable housing • Green Party • Tsunami relief • Anti-cancer

Poverty, peace, the environment and housing took second place to the students, who loudly, sometimes violently, demanded the province restore funding to bursaries in a string of demonstrations over the past months. Considering the blanket media coverage of the Boxing Day tsunami and the subsequent outpouring of generosity, it's somewhat surprising not to see it higher on the list. Montrealers like their causes local, it seems.

Loudest Activist
1. Students
2. Jaggi Singh
3. Darryl Gray
4. Samer Elatrash
5. Paul Cargnello
6. Stefan Christoff
7. Boris St-Maurice
8. Linda Sullivan
9. Xavier Lafrance (CASSÉE)
10. Tommy Schnurmacher

Yep, the students sure were loud this year, loud enough to drown out anarchist-about-town Jaggi Singh, who drops to second place this year after dominating the category since its return in 2002. Other names are familiar, with the exception of Xavier Lafrance, spokesperson for pissed-off student radicals, who appears here for the first time.
