The main event

Last week I was faced with the absolute truth while rummaging through a junk store in my neighbourhood. The truth came in the form of a naked VHS cassette with nothing but the word Wrestlemania written across the front, and when I picked it up, I learned that I am perhaps the biggest nerd in creation. I mean, I knew I was a nerd already, but this was reinforced by a sudden need to pee when I realized that I was holding Wrestlemania 1 in my hand. Have you ever tried explaining to someone that you used to be into wrestling, but not anymore? They kind of look at you sideways, as if to say, "Yeah right - you still are."

But no, I'm not. It's been years since I was remotely interested, but one-fall bouts featuring Special Delivery Jones vs. King Kong Bundy? The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff vs. Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo? Rowdy Roddy Piper and Paul "Mr. Wonderful" Orndorff vs. Hulk Hogan and Mr. T? Wow, I am a nerd.

Got a note this morning from Manchilde about an interesting development in conjunction with the Montreal International Film Festival called 24 Frames that he's involved with. 24 Frames is a hip hop music video showcase that will be screening videos from Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver on the big screen, as well as conducting a panel about how to make your shit look tight, and how to make sure you get into heavy rotation once it's done. On Friday, May 20, at Concordia's Cinema de Sève (1400 de Maisonneuve, first floor), you can catch all of this, starting at 8 p.m. This is a great idea, and something that should be happening every six months, just to keep people moving and on their toes.

A little closer to now is a show at Mile End Bar on Tuesday, May 3, featuring the return of Erik Hove's Soundclash, a jazz outfit that features Mile Perkin on bass, Martin Auguste on drums, P-Love on turntables and young Hove running things on the alto sax. If you haven't seen these guys live before, make sure you check the ill dynamic they have going on.

Canada's self-proclaimed "most entertaining rapper," Chuggo, rolls into town this Saturday, April 30, for a record release party at Blue Dog. His new LP Act Like You Might Know features Immortal Technique, Brooklyn Academy, 2gats and DJ Drastik. This record release party is free, and they've managed to get Masyr, DJ Fiend and DJ Roch D on the bill as well. Doors open at 10 p.m. n
