The Incubator

The wait

A-Trak stopped by the house this week, bearing gifts. Although I was hoping he was going to have a finished copy of his long-awaited Sunglasses Is a Must DVD, he tells me they're still sifting through the thousands of hours of footage he's managed to log while travelling the world for the last seven years. He did, however, hook me up with a copy of the new DJ Serious LP Cold Tea, which features contributions from Masta Ace, D-Sisive, Theology 3, Critically Acclaimed and, well, A-Trak. You can cop that right now at the right record store.

Coco Café opens up the stage to let the brothers vent a little with their Sunday, April 24, production of Sistah Please... over at Jello Bar. Hostess Mahalia Verna will guide you through the ill poetics while DJ Franky Selector (where you at, Cisco!?) takes care of the vibe. Eight bucks gets you in.

Sage Francis is coming back to town. Tuesday, April 26, is the date in question, when Sage grabs the mic at Foufounes alongside the Sol. Illiquists of Sound. Also on the bill, representing Halifax, are the Goods (Kunga 19 & Gordski) and Skratch Bastid, from Winnipeg, John Smith and Pip Skid, and Abra and X-Wam from MTL. Tix are $12 at the door, or $10 in advance.

Straight from the Love Movement Mondays in Toronto, DJ Nana branches out to Montreal with what will hopefully become a regular thing over at le Swimming. He touches down on Thursday, April 28, at midnight, for a night of hip hop, soul and other goodies, with help from the Apathy Is Boring folks. Check out their brand new Web site, too, over at www.apathyisboring.com.

I can't forget about Totally Tuesdays this week. A few weeks back, when the Rockdeep crew got locked out of Saphir on the night of their last party ever, Totally Tuesday over at Korova graciously opened their doors for the night and it popped off anyhow. Take a minute, stop by and check out the hottie behind the decks playing whatever's clever. Click www.autovaud.com/totally for additional info.

Caught a special and a cherry Coke over at Wilensky's last week with Josh Dolgin, aka So Called, on the very day that his new LP The Hip Hop Seder hit the streets. This guy is a classic neighbourhood superstar, and we couldn't walk a block without him being mobbed by fans who he owed money to. If you don't know, his LP is an extra special Passover service, with more chutzpah than Jackie Mason on a roll. It's in stores now on J-Dub Records.

Seven reasons I love baked beans:
1. Platinum Pied Pipers Triple P (Ubiquity)
2. DJ Serious "So High" feat. Theo 3 (Audio Research)
3. Various Future Sound of Jazz Vol. 10 (Compost)
4. Various The Kings of Hip Hop compiled by DJ Premier & Mr.
Thing
(BBE)
5. Beanie Sigel "Don't Stop" 12" (Roc-a-Fella)
6. The Perceptionists "Blo" (Definitive Jux)
7. Quasimoto "Rappcats Pt. 3" (Stones Throw)
