Past days of disco |
|
by RAF KATIGBAK
Tight slacks and coke-spoon medallions aside, disco is the root of the current dance music culture here in Montreal, and a new generation of DJs and producers are discovering the lost gems of the past. Inspired by Dave Mancuso's infamous NYC Loft parties, the Unidisco night will host live Italo disco by Quebec Connection and disco-fied DJ sets by the Mole and Squid, with classic sounds care of Delphi and Ill Pare. So drop by le Local (7154 St-Urbain), Saturday, April 23, and revel in Montreal's half glorious, half shamefully-hairy-chested past. Twelve dollars at the door, only $5 after 3 a.m.! Local deep house ambassador Fred Everything has announced the launch of his own Lazy Days Music imprint this Saturday at Salon Daomé. Seeking to elevate his own recordings and also promote collabs between international artists, the first release "Friday" is the track Everything did with the Australian collective 20for7 last year, and also includes a remix by Trentemoller (the guy behind last year's hit "Le Champagne"). Eight dollars gets you in, with a chance to win T-shirts and other promos. I'm not exactly sure why April babies rule, but I'm sure DJ Miles Moore knows. This Saturday, he'll be blowing out 31 candles as he lights a fire under everyone's asses with deep house and rare grooves over at the Boul Noir pool hall (551 Mont-Royal E). On Friday night, DJs Deliz, Dave O'Brien, Max Miles and DJ Phranteek will be kicking off their latest weekly Bounce Action, a night of electro, ghettotek, and tech-house amongst the "gangsta-type décor" of Utopia (417 St-Pierre, in Old Montreal). Gabber heads and hard-tech junkies will find their fix this Saturday, April 23, at the Bass Nation party. Advertising the event as "100% trance-fat free," special guest DJs Dynamic, Apathy, Slammer and Virus will join a host of local talent to bring more hardness than a geriatric ward on Viagra. Ten bucks in advance, more at the door. Call 927-PLUR (seriously) for more info. If you don't get your fill of D&B at the Black Market CD launch at Blue Dog's Junglist Friday this week, next Wednesday, April 27, Corey K will be launching a new drum & bass weekly at Jupiter with DJs Jase, Mayday, Mint and Sase One. Best of all, it'll be free! HEY GRANDMA, GIMME SOME OF THAT GERIACTION! Diskoakimbo@sympatico.ca |
