Perhaps more than any other actor, Errol Flynn (1909–1959) helped define the term "swashbuckling." So it's about time the noted rogue (his autobiography was titled My Wicked, Wicked Ways) and posthumously suspected Nazi sympathizer (his name has since been cleared), got his due on DVD. Errol Flynn: The Signature Collection contains five Flynn flicks, as well as an exclusive hour-long documentary The Adventures of Errol Flynn. Though The Adventures of Robin Hood wasn't included in the box set (perhaps because it was recently released in a beautiful two-disc edition), Flynnatics will still be happy with the inclusion of Captain Blood, The Sea Hawk, They Died With Their Boots On, Dodge City and The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, a film notable mostly for the on-set tension between Flynn and co-star Bette Davis. (At one point Davis allegedly knocked the virile action star cold!). This sword-fighting, pistol-blazin' good-time is available April 19.
Also new to digital format this week is Pedro Almodovar's brilliant and somewhat overlooked Bad Education, available in both the R-rated and NC-17 version. » Mark Slutsky
