Twice as dirty

by SCOTT C

Just when you were getting ready to embrace the dead-rapper-marketing genius that has the good fortune of sitting on all of Ol' Dirty Bastard's "yet to be released classics," we get word that we can be in on it. That's right, the Damon Dash Music Group are looking for people to remix the song "Dirty Dirty," which will appear on Ol' Dirty's new album A Son Unique, due out in June. You know how this works - download the a cappella from the DDMG site, remix it and upload it back to the site, where it'll be judged by people like the RZA, Dame, and DJ Clark Kent. The remix that makes the cut will be featured on a B-side of an upcoming Ol' Dirty single. Sounds cool, no? Ahhh, but the logic of dead-rapper-marketing genius dictates that the only way you can be eligible for the whole remix thingy is to actually buy the CD. They get you every time. At last check, though, there were several remixes of said song circulating, and the LP isn't even out yet, so go figure. Get those instrumentals ready though, because Mark Ronson's original beat gets the balls.

Write down Saturday, April 16, on the calendar now, because that's the night you're gonna get rocked. Unable to make it down for this year's Hip Hop Symposium over at Concordia, Cuban hip hop group Obsesión managed to find their way to Montreal after all and are making their presence known. You can check out their live show, along with Kobal, Andy Williams and DJ Static, at Divan Orange on the aforementioned date.

Just a side note to mention that CKUT 90.3 FM's fundraiser at B'Ugo's Boudoir this Saturday, April 9, is not at Parking Nightclub, but at Parking Lounge, across the street at 1296 Amherst. Come get deep and jack your body with DJ sexNobe (!), Cyan, Tony Desypris and of course B'Ugo. Tax is $5–$10, sliding scale, and the doors open at 9 p.m.

Check the new night over at Blizzarts called Mondo Musique, every Sunday, with the fabulous DJ Whitefish, who's committed himself to everything from jazz to jungle, hip hop to house, dub to disco, and samba to soul. The Fish used to hold it down at the Mercury Lounge in Ottawa, and if you used to check "the Market" a few years back, you might be familiar with his style. No cover, y'all.

Lastly, DJ Simon B and Fred Everything clean house at Stereo in the main room this Friday, April 8, with soulful sounds from two of the best in town. Don't sleep...

Seven reasons I'll be back:
1. Miss Molly Southern Girl Mix (Metrotalent)
2. Beanie Sigel "Bread and Butter" (Roc-a-Fella)
3. Quasimoto "Another Demo Tape" (Stones Throw)
4. Kobayashi Strange Lights and Resolutions (independent)
5. Lady Sovereign "Random" IG Culture mix (CDR)
6. Elmore Judd "You Said You Were Different" (Above the Clouds)
7. Hezekiah "Conscious Porn" (Soulspazm)
