Learning the hard way

Most of the time, there's no better way to learn than through hands-on experience. In some circumstances, however, it's best to study the theory over the practical. For instance, when it comes to tons of snow hurtling down a mountain. For the group taking an Avalanche Awareness course in the Aspen Highlands Ski Area, they've learned this the hard way - especially the guy who died.

Expecting a day of wisdom and information, six people went exploring the backside of the Ski Area; a deep, volatile slope known as the Five Fingers Bowl. The Pitkin County, Colorado, Sheriff's Office initially announced that the group triggered the slide intentionally, but later reports stated that investigators still weren't sure what had happened.

What is certain is that an avalanche occurred. While most got off with no or minor injuries, one person was critically injured and died before he could be sent to hospital.
