Vidiot's Box

After being resurrected countless times, and after three send-up spoof feature-length films, it seemed the family that wouldn't die finally had done just that. But leave it to the fine format of DVD to help resurrect some choice crap. The arrival of the first season of The Brady Bunch (1969–70), making its digital debut this week, is proof of just how wondrously dreadful the original and initial shows really were. Indeed, this saccharin post-nuclear clan are alive and kicking.

There are sack races, idiotic laugh tracks, stupendous sight gags, Alice the mugging, wisecracking maid, and even an annoying pet dog, Tiger, who acts out. TV culture bottomfeeding doesn't get much better than this. I especially enjoy the performance of Florence Henderson, who seems to be channelling Sandra Dee while on ludes.

Fans of hardcore bad TV have another reason to rejoice as Hogan's Heroes arrives on DVD March 15. What is it with these amnesiac film critics, who were heralding Life Is Beautiful as the first insipid, stupid comedy about the Holocaust? Bob Crane outdid Benigni by decades! » MATTHEW HAYS
