Haircut 101

by SCOTT C

The first time I ever saw a Playboy magazine, one that I could hold in my hands anyway, was while waiting for my dad to get his haircut at Dominic's Unisex Barbershop. There were piles of them, and my father was too busy talking about the hockey game from the night before to notice that I was educating myself about the wonders of the female body.

Locals Tally Abecassis and Claudine Sauvé have come up with the great idea of doing a coffee-table book called Barbershops, where they combine photographs and interviews with some truly legendary hair-masters and explore the culture of the barbershop. They're topping off some fundraising they've been doing with a little do over at Blizzarts on Monday, March 7, at 9 p.m. You can win a copy of the book, original framed photos or other prizes by buying a $5 raffle ticket that night. For more info on the book, check out the Black Dog Press Web site under "future titles" at www.bdpworld.com.

For those of you who were wondering just what the hell had happened to the Ark of Infinity band, you can rest easy. The group with more people on stage than the Rockettes makes its triumphant return to the fold this Friday, March 4, when they rally around their good friend and keyboard player, the street artist Roadsworth, for a show at the Main Hall. Also on the bill are Donkey Heart, the HVW8 Art Installation guys and others. You'll also get to see a sneak peek of the almost completed movie, Next: A Primer on Urban Painting, by Pablo Aravena. I caught the rough cut of this last night, and it's a very beautiful and inspiring look at innovative progressions and expressions in urban art around the world.

Those ol' West Coast drunkies Tha Alkaholiks are scheduled to stagger into town on March 15 for a show at Foufounes. It's been a while, and I think these guys are at the point where people are naturally starting to cling to their older, "classic" material. Hit me upside the head with new material if I'm wrong. De La Soul, on the other hand, have been throwing us hearty new shit on the regular, as well as visiting us in a fairly regular rotation. They have a relationship with Montreal. You can do you part to keep this thing going by checking them out March 18 at Metropolis.

Just a trim, thanks... fathead@videotron.ca
