>> Marathon of shorts, all-night fiestas and global films for kids

by SARAH ROWLAND

Mastodon-sized killer penises, soul-seeking vegetarian zombies and severely handicapped marital artists are just a few of the highlights featured on the director's cut of DJ XL5's Zappin' Party Extravaganza. The extended mix of quick and twisted commercial parodies, animated spoofs and perverted vignettes will play at Cinéma Impérial Saturday, Feb. 26, as part of the second annual La Longue nuit du court. In conjunction with the Montreal High Lights Festival, the18-hour marathon of shorts starts at 6 p.m. and XL5's compilation will screen at 10 p.m. So if you didn't catch his cinematic composition at Fantasia last year, here's your chance to enjoy such gems as Jennifer Shiman's The Exorcist in 30 seconds (Re-Enacted by Bunnies); or Agence de... Voyage #3, a stop-motion hardcore in which Barbie and a Michael Jackson action figure not only get it on on the first date, but that Mattel skank tosses the Gloved One's salad.

Another noteworthy compilation is Tonight the Oscars, made up of eight live action and animated nominees of this year's Academy awards, including Wasp. This 23-minute U.K. production comes courtesy of director Andrea Arnold, whom I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more about in the future. Her portrait of a white trash mother of four who leaves her starving, matted brats outside a bar while she's on a date is sublimely dark and beautiful.

Other venues participating in the all-nighter are the Cinéma ONF, Club Soda (www.spasm.ca) and Cinéma du Parc, where the ninth edition of the ultimate Spanish film showcase Festivalissimo (March 4–March 13) will kick off early with La Noche de los Cortos. Everybody who stays for the Parc's three-hours of Latin shorts is invited to a mariachi party at the Centre Culturel Espagnol. Now, if you don't have energy to burn the night away in a theatre because you have underage dependents waiting for you at home, the eighth annual Festival International du Film Pour Enfants de Montréal (Feb. 26–March 6) has just the ticket. While most of the dozen or so sub-titled films from around the world may be the movie-watching equivalent of eating vegetables, this is the perfect starting point for parents who want to teach their offspring healthy cinema habits at a young age.
