Vidiot's Box

Though ambush journalism is already breaking the passé point, the feature-length doc The Yes Men, due out on DVD this week, is well worth screening. The Yes Men are an oddball duo of pranksters (Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno) who, after throwing up a fake Web site for the World Trade Organization, find themselves invited to economic conferences whose organizers are entirely unaware that the two are fakes. This leads to some hilarious conference presentations, captured here in their full glory.

But my favourite gag comes when the pranksters buy up some talking GI Joes and Barbies and then switch their voice boxes, effectively making Barbie commit vocal drag (talking about killing people) while GI Joe expounds on the fun value of shopping with a friend.

Sadly, the film also feels almost like an elegy for ambush gonzo journalism. After all, with the sensations around the likes of Ali G and Michael Moore, there will be very few people on the Earth who haven't already caught on to the antics of such videographers, meaning the gag is pretty much up. » Matthew Hays
