The Incubator

Ladies say "owww," fellas say "hooo!"

by SCOTT C

If you're like most people in Montreal, you're probably looking for something to do on a Saturday night that's the perfect mix of the right music, a taster's choice of libations and intoxicants, and a good helping of debauchery. I always miss the debauchery. It could be the greatest loft happening in the history of Montreal parties, but by the time I roll in, the impromptu orgy is pretty much over and people are dancing again like nothing even happened. This Saturday, Feb. 12, I can't promise you an orgy, but if you poke your head in down at 400 Dowd, you'll find that Bitches Brew is about as raw as it gets. Not only will you be treated to the DJ selections of Maysr, Specter, DJ Horg and A-Rock, but also the live offerings of the Funky Chef, Butta Beats, Abra, Lateef and more. I should also add that there will be a (ahem) booty-shaking contest, some bottle-spinning (?), some body-winding (??!), a kissing booth and prizes for all who dare to participate! The tax is $5 before 1 a.m., $8 after. Look for me, I'm a booty-shaking champion. Check out www.bitchesbrew.com for the lowdown.

Got to give it up for the ladies, a wise man once said. Montreal superwoman (and my own personal "choice-voice") Dessy Di Lauro has a new weekly Thursday night at Utopia[n] Lounge (417 St-Pierre in Old Montreal), where, along with her band and Crazyglue-head Ric'key Pageot on the keys, we can count on a proper dose of the soul-music standard in this city every week. Seriously. Go to the Web site www.crazygluemusic.com, and if you know somebody who can hang with Dessy on the mic, let a brother know. Six dollars will get you in, and coming back for more, no doubt.

The Moondata Productions live improv sit-in gets up on the Valentine's tip this Saturday over at O Patro Vys. You can enjoy musicians like Patrick Watson, ELE K., Erik Hove, Jahsun of Kalmunity and ring-Leder-man, Matt Lederman, as they explore the most dangerous emotion on Earth, love. Only $8 to get your heart broken.

This Friday, Concordia's annual Hip Hop Symposium is throwing a fundraiser to aid in bringing up some Cuban and Brazilian musicians and activists, who will be participating in the line-up this year. The Canada-Cuba Getdown Part II will be rocking the Nest (3673 St-Dominique) with Kalmunity, Nomadic Massive, members of Solid State, Rawgged MC and the Maneesh Mama, DJ Static and other guests. Seven bucks makes this party happen for you.

Seven reasons Dessy could rule the world:
1. Michael Jackson "I Can't Help It" Todd Terje remix (CDR)
2. Alex & Xan "Another Way" Daz-I-Kue mix (Funk of Fury)
3. Leela James "Rain" (Warner)
4. Dessy Di Lauro "Where Is the Light" (Crazyglue)
5. The Game "Runnin" (Aftermath)
6. GAROT "Beat #5" (CDR)
7. The Impressions "Turn on to Me" 7" (Curtom)
