The Incubator

Surrounded by sound

by SCOTT C

Found myself chatting with Maysr last Friday night, at an all-nighter over at the Kops gallery space on St-Laurent. It'd been a while since I heard the smooth-balled, bearded one play some records, but he still knows how to get it right. Tonight, Feb. 3, you can check out Maysr, Furious and Critical Hype throwing down at their weekly over at Saphir, and welcoming special guest Bad News Brown for a live performance. Also tonight, dip down to Sub-V (5666 Sherbrooke W.) for Streets Are Watching, an art show featuring limited-edition silkscreen prints from a bunch of well-known and misunderstood superstars including Other, Hest, Timer, Moron, Mayhem, Giver and more. Mood music will be provided by Sixtoo, Jaber and Twitch. Fun starts at 6 p.m. and lasts till 10 p.m.

Nice up the place over at El Salon on Friday, Feb. 4, when Montreal crew Typecast heads up Canadian Mic Titans, with special guests Tru-Paz from Toronto and our own Offsides. This $6 show also includes a breakdance battle and money up for grabs. So whether you do it for the love or you're a floor-master mercenary, make sure you're in the place when the music starts.

Kokoro is another Montreal band with a live sound fusing jazz, funk, rock and pop influences, with an MC and vocals. They recently released their debut LP Inspiration Flow and are set for a show at Petit Campus on Feb. 9. They'll be joined by Soulive tribute band Turn It Out for this $5 steal of a show. There's a Soulive tribute band in MTL? Who knew?

Remember that Amon Tobin/Splinter Cell news from last week? Well, good ol' Amon has signed on with Theatre Corona for a show on March 26, where he'll be taking advantage of their special surround-sound setup. Now, if this isn't the perfect event to mix with your drug of choice... never mind. Tickets for this limited-capacity show go on sale Feb. 4, and you'll be happy to know that Sixtoo is also on the bill.

I almost forgot to thank everybody who showed up for Dig Deep! on Jan. 22. Good causes seem to bring out the best in people, and I thank the WeFunk DJs, the Po'Start guys and everyone who helped out Oxfam that night.

Seven reasons we need to build this:
1. The Game The Documentary (Aftermath)
2. Rhian Benson "Say How I Feel" remix feat. Slum Village & Dwele (DKG)
3. Tom Waits Real Gone (Anti-)
4. D'Angelo/James Brown "Left & Right"/"Escapism" (CBD)
5. Sage Francis A Healthy Distrust (Epitaph)
6. Euphrates "I.R.A.Q." (independent)
7. INC "Dr. Tongue" (CDR)
