Beatmakers unite! |

I was happy to see that a Roots Manuva show has been confirmed for Friday, May 6, at la Tulipe, even if I haven’t been able to get my hands on his new LP Colossal Insight, which was released in the U.K. on Jan. 17. Big Rodney hasn’t been up to Montreal for a minute, so this show should bring out the U.K. rapper’s longtime fans, who’ve been itching for a live show for too long. Tickets are on sale for a terribly reasonable $20. Speaking of manoeuvres, check out the stealth move Amon Tobin just made. This Ninja Tune dark horse hooked up a gig doing the soundtrack for the video game Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory for X-Box. Now, for those who don’t know, chaos theory is about finding underlying order in apparently random data, a connection that someone was clearly able to make between this antiterrorist romp and Amon’s haunting soundscapes. I haven’t received a promo copy of the game (yet), but the few tracks I’ve heard from the soundtrack have got me looking over my shoulder already. The soundtrack’s in stores now. Just got off the phone with the big Brit Symon Warwick, otherwise known as A Man Called Warwick, who spends more time in Montreal than any other Torontonian I can think of. He’s in town for Tempo!, the monthly he does with CKUT 90.3’s Waxing Deep man Dan Zacks and Andy Williams, who’ll be throwing down the freshest in tropical rhythms and deep and heavy dancefloor sounds this Friday, Jan. 28, 10 p.m. at the Main Hall, $5 before 11 p.m., $8 after. If you’re hungry for some house, disco, old school hip hop, funk and soul, you may want to get your ass down to the MHotel Bar (951 Rachel E.) on Wednesdays, where Dr. Love and Lexis serve it up hot at their All You Can Hear Buffet. They welcome master chef Fred Everything this Wednesday, when he’ll put a twist on menu staples of deep fried house, nu-soul dumplings and disco stew. I wonder if they have a vegetarian menu? Finally, I’m putting out an open call to local producers and beatmakers. We’re gearing up to launch the monthly Turf Builder Bedroom Production Showcase series at Kunta Lounge in conjunction with our regular Wednesday night, the Spot. There are singers, MCs and musicians there every week, so why not shine a light on the local beats you’d otherwise never hear? Shoot me a note if you want to be a part of it… If you have ideas, you can’t be part of the masses... fathead@videotron.ca |
