Nothing washes away chick-flick residue like drive-bys, turf wars and wisecracking mobsters. So to counterbalance last week's estrogen injection (re: Sex and the City), consider the following DVD recommendation as a form of antidotal cinema: The Warner Gangsters Collection (six pack), including Angels With Dirty Faces, Little Caesar, The Petrified Forest, Public Enemy, The Roaring Twenties and White Heat. Armed with their potent one-liners, James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart dominate these black and white classics that made Warner Bros. the godfathers of gangster films throughout the '30s and '40s. If the Carrie Bradshaw fan in your life tries to change the channel while you're watching Bogie and Cagney shoot 'em up, whip out your remote control and ask, "Say, what's the big idea here?" Then after successfully regaining control of the converter, stand on your couch and shout, "Look Ma, I'm on top of the world." As your video partner hightails it out of your apartment, take comfort in knowing that Friday Night Lights, an ass-patting, critically acclaimed football movie starring Billy Bob Thornton, is also making its digital debut this week. » SARAH ROWLAND
