From failed "peep artist" to aspiring "urban guerilla," Jon Rubin (Robert De Niro) is a magnificent failure in Brian De Palma's 1970 feature-length debut Hi, Mom! To begin with, the fresh-faced Vietnam Vet convinces a porn producer to fund a cinematic project in which he aims his camera at unsuspecting neighbours. Despite Josh's questionable moral judgement, the social satire bobs along with a sweet '60s sensibility. In one scene, where Josh is apartment hunting for a room with a view, he comes across a slum lord extraordinaire (Charles Durning). The roach-faced proprietor points to a pile of rag-stained mattresses on the floor and says in a straight-up NY accent, "I forgot that it's furnished so I'm gonna have to charge you a little more." Without skipping a beat, Josh replies, "I'll take it." Now so can you, as it's new on DVD this week.
