Yimou Zhang's Hero is almost too beautiful to waste on an undeserving idiot box. But if you missed this year's most visually stunning cinematic event on the big screen, renting the DVD is better than not experiencing the mind-blowing imagery at all. The pre-unified China epic follows Jet Li's nameless character, a legendary swordsman who claims to have conquered the King of Qin's enemies. Summoned to rehash the details of his heroic slaying with his majesty, Li and the evil ruler go back and forth disputing the actual events of the famed battle. With each colour-coded flashback, the cinematic schemes change from bleeding-heart reds to enchanting emerald greens to baby blue hues. (Suffice to say, this is not recommended viewing for people who suffer from colour blindness.)
Hungry for more? Watch Henry Jaglom's 1990 film Eating, a loosely scripted serious comedy that examines the endless and bizarre ways woman shove food down their cake hole. This special edition includes commentary and a biography about the celebrated director. Highly recommended viewing for people who are in the Zone, on the Atkins, only snack before six, never combine their carbs with natural sugars. » Sarah Rowland
