Tim Burton's brilliant 1994 biopic Ed Wood finally makes its long-waited digital debut. Johnny Depp stars as the legendary Plan 9 From Outer Space director, and he's at the absolute top of his game here as the almost psychotically optimistic Wood (Depp would later say that Ronald Reagan's personality partially inspired his performance). The DVD offers a nice selection of special features: commentary by Burton and Martin Landau, who gave an Academy Award-winning performance as Bela Lugosi, and a behind-the-scenes mini doc hosted by Depp called Let's Shoot this F#*%@r!.

Also new on DVD this week is Explorers. While hardly considered a masterpiece, it's still a movie that captivated this writer as a kid. Ethan Hawke and the late River Phoenix star as a pair of kids who build a working spaceship out of a Tilt-A-Whirl car. Later, in the surprising (to say the least) climax, they hang out with some TV-obsessed aliens. It was the '80s. Anyway, if you're like me and once strongly identified with these scrappy misfits, now's your chance to revisit Joe Dante's fantastical film. » Mark Slutsky
