Friday night, techno heads will no doubt be heading over to Aria to catch Frankfurt DJ Chris Liebing. Considered a god by fans (and Germany's Michael Jackson by his critics) Liebing's been rocking the same progressive hard-tech sounds for years now. Consistent or redundant? You decide. After a seasonal hiatus, local party-throwers AfterDARK return for their one-year anniversary/massive four-loft event. On Friday, Sept. 24, 1619 William will be transformed into a massive entertainment complex featuring DJs including Corey K, Sase One, Venom and Versatile and bands like Concorde Crash and Tommy Mess ($5 contribution, please). Saturday night, Stereo resident Stephan Grondin celebrates his birthday over at Unity II's Muscle Beach weekly with performances by Sheena Hershey and Jay Aviance, while over at the Main Hall, DJ Simmz, Tony Roma and VJ Orangejuice launch their new monthly Deep. A $10 cover gets you dark and sexy beats all night long. Also on Saturday, it's a different shade of deep as Phoniq presents a deep-listening party at la Salle d'Attente where Toronto's Akumu, and locals naw, scant intone and various perform live along with DJ Cyan. Next Monday, DJ Bliss digs deep in his collection for Madchester hits and Britpop classics as he hosts another bi-weekly Mind the Gap night at Blizzarts. This week's guest Jordan Dare will no doubt dust off some dance-rock gems for your aural amusement, so make sure to come out! On Tuesday, Montreal favourite Sammy Dee will bring the tech-house sounds of Germany's Perlon Records to Dizzy Tuesdays at Salon Daomé. This is a chance to catch this great DJ in an intimate atmosphere, so make sure to be there early as I'm sure it'll be a packed house! Disko Akimbo Polling time: Only weeks after Montreal's Elektra fest announced they'd be moving their program from November to early May, organizers of Montreal's Mutek fest (traditionally held in late May) have released a public response, expressing concern that (among other things) Elektra will split the 40 per cent of Mutek attendees that are from outside of Quebec, leaving less for both fests. I want to know what you think - is Elektra's move to early May doing more harm than good? The first three people who e-mail me a response (i.e. an informed opinion beyond "yes" or "no") will get to choose a CD from a selection of recent promotional discs (some of which don't suck!). This town ain't big enough for the both of us… or is it? Diskoakimbo@sympatico.ca |
